Every step
after the first is easier.
The first session of psychotherapy is much like many
first meetings. It consists of both of us beginning to get to know
each other and exploring whether we can work well together.
You can expect to describe the circumstances that brought you
to treatment and to begin to explore them. I will take an active
interest in how this came to be, how you understand the problem
and what you would like to accomplish as a result of our work
together. It is not uncommon in the first session to be unable
to articulate what you want, other than to say that you want
to feel better.
If, after about half an hour, I believe that
I can be helpful to you, and you want to work with me, we
will take care of some practical matters, such as scheduling,
frequency
of sessions, and payment of fees. If you have coverage under
your health insurance, we can discuss how we can help you
receive your benefits.
